Whoopi Goldberg Says Age Gaps Don’t Matter, Once Dated Someone 40 Years Older

Age ain’t nothing but a number for Whoopi Goldberg. The EGOT winner is opening up about her nonchalant approach to dating people outside of her age group.
Goldberg, 68, got a little candid about her love life on Thursday’s episode of “The View” during a topic about age gaps in relationships. The ladies were discussing Anne Hathaway’s upcoming movie “The Idea of You,” which follows a 40-year-old woman who pursues a relationship with a famous 24-year-old singer.
The Hot Topics discussion got the ladies to admit the age gaps in their own lives with Sunny Hostin noting how most of the co-hosts married men who were younger than them, as noted by Entertainment Weekly. But Goldberg topped everyone with her admission.
“I’ve gone up and down,” Goldberg revealed. “I go from here to here, because your age is not what’s going to get me into your arms. It’s not your age that I’m concerned about — unless you’re under 18, in which case I can’t.”
Co-host Joy Behar noted how “problematic” age gap romances can be, which prompted Goldberg to reveal the huge age gap she entertained in her most recent relationship.
“One of the last relationships I had, he was 40 years older than me,” she said.
When asked if her ex is still alive, Goldberg nodded and mouthed “Mhmm” before throwing to a commercial break. According to EW’s math on Goldberg’s ex, he would be around 108 years old today.
This comes after Goldberg’s granddaughter Amara Skye revealed on ABC’s reality series “Claim to Fame” in 2022 that her famous grandmother previously dated a billionaire in his 90s. It’s likely the century-old ex-beau is the same man Goldberg dated who was 40 years older than her.
The “Sister Act” star has been married three times. Her ex-husbands include drug counselor Alvin Martin, Dutch cinematographer David Claessen, and actor Lyle Trachtenberg.
In August 2023, she revealed more about her sexuality after actress Raven-Symoné noted the “lesbian vibes” she gets from the veteran Hollywood star.
“Women have been asking me this for as long as I’ve been around, I am not a lesbian.I know lots of them, and I’ve played them on television,” Goldberg said. “But I have always had lesbian friends because they’re just my friends.”
She went on to share how far she’s willing to go with her lesbian friends.
“I’ll tell them, ‘I’m not gonna kiss you, but I’ll kiss you over here, I’ll do this, but I’m not going to do this’ … and they’re like, ‘OK!’”
