Russell Wilson Preparing To Join Pittsburgh Steelers

Less than a week after the Denver Broncos announced that quarterback Russell Wilson would no longer be on the team, the Super Bowl-winning player has landed with another NFL team.

ESPN reported that Wilson, who hasn’t been officially released yet (that takes place on March 13), will be signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the upcoming season. He is expected to sign for the veteran’s minimum, which will be $1.2 million for the season. And due to how his contract with the Broncos was structured, that team will pay the quarterback the rest of his salary: $37.8 million.

The quarterback posted on his X account announcing he will be playing a 13th year in the league.

Because Wilson was still under contract, he had to get permission from the Broncos to speak to the Steelers, and the Broncos granted that request. On March 8, he went to Pittsburgh to meet with officials from the team. Head coach Mike Tomlin and new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith spoke with Wilson for over six hours, leading both sides to agree to his inclusion on the team for the upcoming season.

This is Wilson’s third team after being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks as a third-round draft pick in 2012. He spent 10 seasons with them, winning the Super Bowl in 2014. After being traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in September 2022, Wilson inked a five-year, $245 million contract. Based on that deal, the team will be paying him $85 million over the next two seasons.

The Super Bowl-winning quarterback had an 11-19 record while starting 30 games for the franchise. Wilson completed 63.3% of his throws for 6,594 yards and had 42 touchdowns with 19 interceptions. He is the only player in NFL history with at least 40,000 passing yards and 5,000 rushing yards. Wilson has thrown for 43,653 yards and 334 touchdowns with 106 interceptions in his 12-year career.
