Google Removes Black History Month From Calendar

Google has removed several important cultural observances from Google Calendar, including Pride Month, Black History Month, and Holocaust Remembrance Day. The company explained in an email to Newsweek that its previous system for adding these events was “unsustainable.” Going forward, Google Calendar will only display public holidays and national observances.

Users of Google Calendar quickly noticed the absence of these events, which were previously marked on the platform. For example, Google had included Black History Month in February, Pride Month in June, and other observances like Women’s History Month and Indigenous Peoples Month. However, these events are no longer listed for 2025.

This change comes amid ongoing debates about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. After President Donald Trump signed an executive order to dismantle DEI programs, several major companies, including Google, scaled back their diversity initiatives. Some critics worry that this will negatively affect LGBTQ+ rights and other social issues.

In response to the backlash, Google spokesperson Madison Cushman Veld defended the change, stating that the company had received feedback that some events were missing and that manually adding hundreds of cultural observances worldwide was not sustainable. Many Google Calendar users expressed their disappointment on social media, calling the move “shameful” and accusing Google of downplaying significant cultural moments.

As of now, Google has not said whether it will bring back these observances. Users who want to track events like Pride Month or Black History Month must now add them manually to their calendars.

In other news, Disney also removed its “Reimagine Tomorrow” DEI program from its latest corporate report but introduced a new initiative focused on hiring U.S. military veterans.
