APD: Shooting in 'self-defense' after tire slashing incident
AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Wednesday, the Austin Police Department identified a 34-year-old man who died in a shooting on North Lamar Boulevard.
APD responded to the shooting on Feb. 24 around 2 p.m. after a caller said they “shot someone in self-defense,” the release said.
Officers found a man with a gunshot wound, later identified as Christopher Hernandez. Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:34 p.m., police said.
Detectives and crime scene specialists determined that Hernandez was slashing the callers’ tires with a knife. When the caller confronted Hernandez, police said Hernandez threatened the caller with the knife. The caller then shot Hernandez, the release said.
Police said the caller remained on scene and was cooperative with the investigation. No arrests have been made at this time, according to the release. APD is investigating this case as Austin’s 10th homicide of 2024.
