Donald Trump Dog Whistles That Migrants Are Predisposed To Committing Murder: ‘It’s In Their Genes’
With less than a month to go before Election Day, Donald Trump is predictably ramping up the fearmongering and hate speech. And that’s exactly what his rageful campaign against migrants, whether documented or undocumented, has been: hate speech.
It was hate speech when he echoed his running mate’s lies about Haitian migrants abducting and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, on the nationally televised debate stage. It was hate speech when he repeatedly compared migrants to Hannibal Lecter, and it was hate speech when he called them “animals” who are “not human.” Now, Trump has upgraded his brand of hate speech from garden-variety racism to scientific racism by suggesting that migrants are predisposed to murder because it’s in their “genes.”
“How about allowing people to come to an open border, 13,000 of which were murderers, many of them murdered far more than one person, and they’re now happily living in the United States,” Trump told right-wing radio host Hugh Hewitt on Monday in his latest attack against his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. “You know, now a murderer — I believe this — it’s in their genes. And we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now.”
Besides the fact that Trump is continuing to lie about migrants causing a surge in violent crime in America — an oft-repeated assertion that is not remotely supported by violent crime data from any reputable database — the white nationalist who is dangerously close to being elected to the White House for a second time echoing the eugenics movement. He’s echoing the Ku Klux Klan’s belief in the genetic superiority of white people. He’s echoing Nazi Germany. (This is as good a time as any to remind you that JD Vance once compared Trump to Adolf Hitler before he became the racist Robin to Trump’s bigoted Batman.)
Mind you, this isn’t the first time Trump has resorted to the kind of rhetoric that had former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke accusing him of jacking his political style a few years ago. Back in the early stages of his first presidential run — around the time when he was generalizing Mexican immigrants as “rapists” who are “bringing drugs” and “bringing crime” into the U.S. — he baselessly claimed Mexican migrants were bringing “tremendous infectious disease” to the U.S., which is easily comparable to a 1941 Nazi propaganda poster that read, “Jews Are Lice: They Cause Typhus.” More recently, he said that immigrants are “poisoning the blood” of the country, which is about as neo-Nazi-ish as a person can sound without just flat-out shouting “Heil Hitler!”
Trump supporters will say I’m being hyperbolic. (I mean, I’m not the one lying about crime and claiming brown people have murder genes, but whatever.) But the fact that they are still going to vote for the most outwardly bigoted president in modern history, and the fact that they are so cavalier about overt, malicious racism being spewed so casually, indicates that Trump is simply preaching to his Klan-ish choir.
Take Hugh Hewitt for example. Just a couple of short months ago, Hewitt joined other conservative pundits in expressing outrage over Black journalist Rachel Scott, the senior congressional correspondent for ABC News, questioning Trump about his racist attacks on Harris’ racial identity, the aggression he has leveled against Black journalists, and the dinner he had with loud and proud white nationalist Nick Fuentes during Trump’s disastrous appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). Hewitt — who, in 2016, declared that Trump did not have “the temperament to be president” — claimed he had “never seen a more unprofessional opening of an ‘interview’ than that offered by ABC’s Rachel Scott to former President Donald Trump.” Yet, in Hewitt’s own Trump interview, he didn’t bother pushing back on his guest’s dangerously bigoted and completely unfounded claim that entire non-white ethnic groups have genes that predetermine them as murderers. His refusal to do bare minimum journalistic work and push back against blatant hate speech wasn’t “unprofessional,” but Scott addressing the racist elephant in the NABJ room was. Got it.
Just a couple of weeks ago, GOP Congressman Clay Higgins came under fire for tweeting: “These Haitians are wild. Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the Western hemisphere, cults, splatstick gangsters… but damn if they don’t feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP.” This was the Louisiana Republican’s response to charges filed by the Haitian Bridge Alliance against Trump and Vance for spreading their pet-eating propaganda, which has caused bomb threats and hate crimes against the Haitian community in and outside of Ohio.
The MAGA world is far too comfortable with this brand of white supremacy — and that’s why Trump is so comfortable being a Nazi whisperer.
